On August 5, 2023, Managing Partner Michael Kibler was a featured speaker on the “Perspectives on Civil Litigation” panel as part Loyola Law School’s 18th Annual Journalist Law School. Loyola’s Journalist Law School fellowship program is a 4-day legal boot camp for 30 journalist fellows, who are competitively selected from a broad applicant pool. The 2023 fellows work for national media outlets, including the New York Times, NBC News, CBS News, CNN, the Associated Press, PBS, Bloomberg, the Washington Post, and several other outlets, who cover various aspects of the law and the legal system. Loyola’s journalist program, chaired by Professor Jessica Levinson, condenses contemporary core law school subjects and break-out topics into a dense four days with courses taught by Loyola Law School faculty, practicing attorneys, legislators and judges. Over the last 18 years, more than 500 reporters, editors and producers have completed the fellowship from a wide range of local, national and international news organizations. During the discussion, Mike and his co-panelists, Cyndie Chang and Donna Melby, discussed “Civil Litigation 101,” access to court files, how to develop sources in high-profile civil matters, and budgetary problems in our over-taxed civil court system, among other topics.
